Sebastiano Impedovo received the degree in Physic in 1972 at the University of Bari. He carried out research on pattern recognition, in the Department of Physic at the University of Bari, from 1972 to 1982 and continued as full professor at the Department of Computer Science until the retirement. He served, during the working period, as President of the Computer Science School, Director of the Department, coordinator of the PhD School and finally as coordinator of the Department Directors Council.
He has published more than 240 papers and several books in the field of handwriting recognition, document analysis, communication technologies, distance learning, web-based training and collaborative work. He was member of the editorial board of the “International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence” and of the “International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition”.
He was the chair of the “Second International Workshop on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition” held in Bonas (France) in 1991, chair of the Seventh “International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing” held in Bari (Italy) in 1993, director of the NATO-ASI school on “Fundamentals in Handwriting Recognition” in 1993, chair of the tutorial “Fundamentals in Handwriting Recognition” held in Montreal in 1995. He was the chair of the fifth “International Workshop on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition” held in Colchester (UK). He was the chair of several other relevant workshops and tutorials in the following years. In the last years of his career, he was the chair of 13th “International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition” organized, for the first time, in Italy in 2012. He was the Honorary Chair of the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition in 2015.
Sebastiano Impedovo was appointed as IAPR Fellow in 1998 for his contributions in handwriting recognition and document analysis and for his service to IAPR. He is IEEE Senior Member, and he has been IAPR, ACM, IGS, ANIPLA and AICA member.
Even if retired, he still invests part of his time reading the papers of interest.
